Third Places

Interactive teaching tools for Ray Oldenburg's third-place theory. Pick an activity to begin.

Activity 1
Third Place Decoder
Match each of Oldenburg's eight characteristics to its correct description.
Activity 2
Third Place Lab
Multi-phase classroom lab: analyse real-world cases, run stress tests, and synthesise findings.
Activity 3
Third Place Builder
Resource-management simulation: build a third place over eight seasons under money, attention and ownership constraints.
Activity 4
Third Place Portrait
Identify the ideal state for each of Oldenburg's eight characteristics within a chosen third place, with visual feedback and a scored quiz.
Activity 5
Third Place Recall
Reconstruct what you remember about Oldenburg's eight characteristics, then compare your recall against the source material.
Activity 6
Evidence Compass
Decompose the claim that third places are declining into sub-claims and consider what evidence each disciplinary lens would require.
Activity 7
Theory of Change
Interactive slide deck introducing Theory of Change as a methodology: what it is, who uses it, and why the Describe phase is its foundation.
Activity 8 · Week 5
Field Visit
Observe two contrasting London sites in groups, each observer on their own phone, then explain what about each place produces or blocks Oldenburg's eight characteristics. Includes an instructor console and individual homework.
Activity 9
Criteria Forge
Adjudicate between two competing explanations, then dissect your own justification to discover which criteria you were already using.
Activity 10 ยท Week 6b
Adjudication Bench
Adjudicate between two competing explanations for a decline claim: commit to predictions before seeing evidence, rate on four criteria with cited evidence, and reach a verdict.
Activity 11
Quattro Mondi
Run one pizza firm in four market structures at once over eight months: identical costs, radically different prices, output and welfare.
Activity 12 · Week 4
World Café
Projection deck introducing the World Café method and running it over the four decline claims: three rounds, one table per claim, one index card per person per round.
Activity 13 · Week 6
Claim Wall Sort
A drag-and-drop copy of the corkboard claim wall: tidy the cards, add new ones from the week 5 field visit, and link similar explanations with red string. The instructor merges every group's wall into one class wall.
Activity 14 · Week 7
Why Bodø?
Follow-up to the claim wall sort: expose what the cards assume, break vague ones down to a mechanism, test whether they hold in Bodø, then each student writes and sharpens one sentence on what causes decline there. Prints one A6 card per student.
